چکیده

Following the outburst of the unusual variable star V838 Monocerotis in 2002, a spectacular light echo appeared. A light echo provides the possibility of direct geometric distance determination, because it should contain a ring of highly linearly polarized light at a linear radius of ct, where t is the time since the outburst. We present imaging polarimetry of the V838 Mon light echo, obtained in 2002 and 2005 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, which confirms the presence of the highly polarized ring. Based on detailed modeling that takes into account the outburst light curve, the paraboloidal echo geometry, and the physics of dust scattering and polarization, we find a distance Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS5-26555. A Light Echo from Type Ia Supernova SN 1995E?

We identify a light echo candidate from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of NGC 2441, the host galaxy of the Type Ia supernova 1995E. From the echo’s angular size and the estimated distance to the host galaxy, we find a distance of 207±35 pc between the dust and the site of the supernova. If confirmed, this echo brings the total number of observed non-historical Type Ia light echoes to thre...

The Structure of the Prototype Bipolar Protoplanetary Nebula Crl 2688 (egg Nebula): Broadband, Polarimetric, and H2 Line Imaging with Nicmos on the Hubble Space Telescope

High-resolution near-infrared (1.65–2.1 mm) images and 2 mm polarimetric images of the inner 190.5 # 190.3 region of the bipolar protoplanetary nebula CRL 2688, taken with the newly installed Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer (NICMOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), are reported. The NICMOS images reveal a wealth of structure also seen in HST Wide Field Planetary Camera...

Spitzer Observations of V838 Monocerotis: Detection of a Rare Infrared Light Echo

We present Spitzer observations of the unusual variable V838 Monocerotis. Extended emission is detected around the object at 24, 70 and 160 μm. The extended infrared emission is strongly correlated spatially with the HST optical light echo images taken at a similar epoch. We attribute this diffuse nebulosity to be from an infrared light echo caused by reprocessed thermal emission from dust heat...

Telescope Imaging of the Outburst Site of M 31 RV 1

M31 RV is a luminous red variable star that appeared for several months in the bulge of M31 during 1988. Unlike classical novae, M31 RV was cool throughout its outburst. Interest in this object has revived recently because of its strong resemblance to V838 Mon, a luminous Galactic variable star that appeared in 2002 and is illuminating a spectacular light echo, and has evolved to ever-cooler su...

Using the Hubble Telescope to Determine the Split of a Cosmological Object’s Redshift into its Gravitational and Distance Parts

The Hubble Telescope should make it possible to separate the redshift of light from any cosmological object into that redshift due to the gravitational potential difference between the emission and reception points and that portion due the distance between these points by comparing the redshifts measured on the Earth’s surface to redshifts measured by the Hubble Telescope. This would allow a re...
